Evolutionary and cognitive anthropologist McCorkle has revised his 2007 Ph.D. dissertation at Queen's University, Belfast, removing much the statistical data to make room to elaborate his arguments, and leaving out his field observations to focus on his experimental findings. He considers what kind of widespread behaviors humans exhibit when disposing of dead bodies, what kinds of past and extant explanation have been proffered for this behavior. Then he explains why these explanations fall short, and sets out a model of his own that may provide at least a start to a new and viable explanation of the religious ritualized disposal of corpses. Most of his field work, and so his examples, involve Buddhists. Among his topics are manufacturing Buddhism; stupa, relic, and hungry ghosts; evolutionary disgust; and corpse, concept, and contagion triggers. 作者簡介
The Author: William W. McCorkle, Jr. is an evolutionary and cognitive anthropologist interested in ritual, language, and communication. He earned his Ph.D. from the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University in Belfast, one of the world’s premiere centers for research on cognition, culture, and religion. He has conducted fieldwork in India and Japan and devised original experiments to test his theory on the ritualized burial of dead bodies by humans. He regularly gives papers and presentations internationally on ritual and human behavior. Most recently, he has served as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
