Getting and Keeping New Teachers: Six Essential Steps from Recruitment to Retention

Mulvey (Pace University's School of Education) and Cooper (educational leadership, Fordham University) offer six essential steps for recruiting and retaining new public school teachers, especially in inner city, rural, and other high-needs school districts. Recommendations are made in a case study format, drawing on the voices of real teachers and other education leaders to outline the characteristics of good schools and compares them to the actual environments in which new teachers work. Some subjects explored include supporting new teachers, collegiality and teamwork, overcoming student apathy, classroom management, and ways in which principals can drive more funds and resources toward the classrooms.
