商品簡介
Historians, researchers, and students will benefit from this collection of original documents, reproduced in facsimile, on the history, economics, and practice of slave trading in Britain and the vociferous discussion that led to its abolition. Each of the four volumes is edited by a specialist who provides a lengthy introduction to the volume and one- or two-page introductions to each document, as well as annotations. Volume 1, on the operation of the slave trade in Africa, includes four works: John Hawkins' "A true declaration..." (1569); John Matthews' A voyage to the River Sierra-Leone (1788); John Adams' Sketches taken during ten voyages... (1821); and Gomer Williams' History of the Liverpool privateers... (1897). Volume 2, on the Royal African Company, contains documents that give the details of its charter, financial issues concerning its forts in Africa, its competition, and its role in British imperial and naval power, among other issues. Volumes 3 and 4 contain documents for and against abolition of slavery, as this was debated in Britain, dating from 1787-1807. A complete index is provided in v.4. Distribution in the US is by Ashgate. Annotation c2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
