商品簡介
Cameroon's linguistic history is complex, at least as complex as its religious history. In fact, in the case of Cameroon the two came together to create a long series of clashes between mission personnel and various colonial governmental authorities. Orosz (history, U. of Maine) describes how Protestant missionaries were regarded as unpatriotic because they used indigenous languages to teach and preach. This came despite a long history of anti-Catholicism, framed by Germany's Kulturkampf and French anti-clerical legislation. However, a sudden shift in policy by Catholics in Cameroon about using indigenous languages made them, in turn, appear to be unpatriotic. Orosz traces the roots of the dispute from the origins of language policy in German Cameroon in the late nineteenth century to about 1907, and the subsequent shifts in French language policy from 1914 to 1922.
