Bibliography of Jews in the Islamic World

This unannotated bibliography (put together by two editors of the Index Islamicus and a researcher at the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East in Spain) list 12,183 works drawn from journals, collective volumes, single-author books, and other publications concerned with the history and culture of Jewish peoples in Islamic lands, defined as areas inhabited by Jews living under Muslim rule or having a majority Muslim population, such as Arab lands under French or British rule (the special case of Palestine/Israel is handled by including works about local Jews and not European immigrants prior to 1948 and Jews of Mizrahi origin only post-1948). The works included cover a broad thematic spectrum and were drawn primarily from journals, monographs, and collective volumes written in the main European languages and Hebrew from the middle of the 19th century to the present. Maria Angeles Gallego is researcher at the Instituto de Lenguas y Culturas del Mediterraneo y Oriente Proximo of the Spanish High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) in Madrid. Her field of expertise is the history and culture of Jews in Islamic territories and, more specifically, medieval Judeo-Arabic. Previously, she has co-edited the bibliography Afghanistan (Brill, 2005) alongside Heather Bleaney and worked as indexer of the Index Islamicus.Heather Bleaney is Editor of Index Islamicus which is compiled at the School of Oriental and African Studies Library, London. She has contributed to a number of publications on the modern Middle East. Pablo Garcia Suarez is an editor of Index Islamicus and translator of modern Arabic literature and journalism into Spanish. He regularly teaches seminars on journalist translation at the Escuela de Traductores de Toledo (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha).
