Sixteen US academics, researchers, and current and former K-12 classroom teachers contribute nine essays articulating their hopes for better public education, arising from the same optimism and determination that captured the country during the campaign that led to Obama's presidency. Beginning with a discussion of the need to reskill the teaching force after years of slowly eroding teachers' skills, the articles examine issues related to policies and the current education reform efforts, including unintended negative consequences from too narrow a focus and the rights of children, and provide specific examples of how teachers can be reskilled. The book's readership includes pre-service and in-service teachers, professors, administrators, and policy-makers. No subject index has been provided.
