商品簡介
These four reproduced works represent the only known medical texts written by women during the Restoration. In the introduction, Cody (whose affiliation is unspecified but who has a journal article cited) explains how they challenge assumptions about women healers in this period. Jane Sharpe's 418-page The Midwives Book , the earliest such manual written by a woman in England, is said to hold up well to modern books on the subject. Elizabeth Cellier proposed creating a College of Midwives. In Medicatrix, or the Woman-Physician , Mary Trye defended treating patients with medicines rather than by bleeding. The Mid-wives just Petition (1643) satirizes stereotypes about the profession. Readability of the facsimiles varies considerably. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
