Whether found in the religious purpose of ancient Olympic Games, in curses believed to plague the Chicago Cubs or in the figure of Tim Tebow, religion and sports are tightly intertwined. One way to understand the relationship between sports and religion (particularly Christianity) is to examine how each discourse coalesces around and utilizes common concepts. Scholes and Sassower suggest sports discourse often displaces the centrality of religious institutions as the primary backdrop for political and moral integrity. Religion and Sports in American Culture demonstrates that cultural expressions involving both sports and religion are at times quite similar, but do not suggest an inherent conflict between religion and sports for the same adherents. Both religion and sports are fundamentally social and communal, as they bring people together to worship in public places. Both religion and sports help to understand each other.
Jeffrey Scholes is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies in the Philosophy Department at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He is the Director of the Center for Religious Diversity and Public Life at UCCS. His areas of interest include American religion and political economy as well as religion and popular culture. He is the author of A Vocation As Politics: Work and Popular Theology in a Consumer Culture (2012).
Raphael Sassower is professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. His areas of interest include Postmodern Technoscience, Digital Culture, and the Philosophy of the Social Sciences (primarily economics). Among his latest publications are Postcapitalism: Moving Beyond Ideology in America's Economic Crisis (2009) and War Images: Fabricating reality (2010).
