商品簡介
This is a comparative analysis of two grassroots movements that successfully challenged state power in two countries of the Soviet Bloc in order to expand space for independent action free of state control. Doellinger (history, Western Oregon U.) investigates the emergence of a "secret church" operating in parallel to the state-controlled official Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia and the development of an independent peace movement in the German Democratic Republic, which similarly had its roots in the non-Catholic Evangelical Protestant Church. He has produced a bottom-up view of these movements and of church-state relations in the two communist countries by building his analysis on activist publications, interviews with former participants, local church records, and other non-state primary sources.
