Cahen was one of the foremost French scholars in Muslim Near Eastern History. In an English translation of his unpublished French manuscript appeared as Pre-Ottoman Turkey . He continued to revise his manuscript however and published it in French as La Turquie PrT-Ottomane in 1988. Rather than try to incorporate 20 years of changes into a new English edition, Holt (history of the Near and Middle East, School of Oriental and African Studies, London) starts over and translates the finished volume and some light editing. It covers first the history then the society and institutions of Turkey before the Mongols, then does the same for the Mongol period. Besides one map, there are no illustrations. Annotation c.
