In this study, Alban examines mythological and literary references to the serpent goddess Melusine from ancient to modern times. Early chapters provide background information on various aquatic great goddesses and on pre-patriarchal cultures of goddess worship. The main part of the text is then devoted to an analysis of the portrayal of the Fairy Melusina in A.S. Byatt's 1990 novel Possession .
