Sincerity in Politics and International Relations

This work examines concept of sincerity in politics and international relations in order to discuss what we should expect of politicians, within what parameters should they work, and how their decisions and actions could be made consistent with morality.

The collection features an international cast of authors who specialize in the topic of sincerity in politics and international relations. Each chapter will be focused on a contemporary issue in politics and international relations, including corruption, public hypocrisy, cynicism, trust, security, policy formulation and decision-making, political apology, public reason, denial and self-deception,and will argue against the background of a Kantian view of sincerity as unconditional.

Focusing on sincerity bearing on political actions, practices, and institutions at national and international level, the collection will include an introduction by the editors that will serve to place the contributions in the context of ongoing contemporary debates on sincerity in politics and international theory. Offering a significant comprehensive outlook on the practical limits of sincerity in political affairs, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars alike.

Sorin Baiasu is Reader in Philosophy at Keele University (UK). He is the author of Kant and Sartre: Re-discovering Critical Ethics (Palgrave Macmillan 2011) and co-editor of Politics and Metaphysics in Kant (with Howard Williams and Sami Pihlstrom – UWP 2011) and of Kant on Practical Justification: Interpretative Essays (with Mark Timmons – OUP 2013 In print). He edited a special issue of the journal Ethics and Politics Review on “Kantian Justifications of Practical Norms” (2007) and co-edited (with Michelle Grier) a special issue of Kantian Review on “The Revolutionary Kant” (2011). He published articles in the journals Politics and Ethics Review, International Journal of Philosophical Studies, Contemporary Political Theory, Kantian Review, Bulletin of the Hegel Society of Great Britain, Sartre Studies International and the Journal of Political Philosophy, as well as in other edited collections.

Sylvie Loriaux works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Legal Philosophy, Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands). She received her PhD in philosophy from the K.U.Leuven (Belgium). Subject of her research is primarily the field of theories of justice and global ethics. She has contributed articles to journals/books such as Global Society, the Journal of Global Ethics, Journal of International Relations and Development, the South African Journal of Philosophy, Dicopo: Dictionnaire de theorie politique, Sovereign Justice: Global Justice in a World of Nations, and Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
