Long considered in opposition, these two great minds of the twentieth century may actually have more in common than we (or they) thought. Hurst (philosophy, The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan U.) finds, for example, that the logical structure beneath Lacan's psychoanalytic theory corresponds to Derrida's "plural logic of the aporia." She begins by explaining Derrida's and Lacan's interpretation of Freud that interrupted the trajectory of transcendentalism.. After a startling assertion that Lacanian Real is closely allied, if not the same as Derrida's difference, she shows how Derrida's interpretations of the work of Heidegger and Nietszche parallels that of Lacan, especially in terms of sexual difference and feminine sexuality. She closes by examining Derrida's reading of Lacan's "Seminar on 'The Purloined Letter'" and although she understands Derrida's antagonism, she locates theoretical equivalencies that link both to the use of psychoanalysis in addressing contemporary issues.
