作者簡介

Jane Fleming is an Associate Clinical Professor in Early Literacy at Erikson Institute in Chicago. She is a reading specialist with more than 20 years’ experience working in urban public schools in Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Her research examines teachers’ use of culturally relevant literature in literacy instruction and its impact on student learning and engagement. She is a frequent consultant for schools, professional organizations, and teacher education programs on the use of urban children’s literature to support reading and writing achievement.

Susan Catapano is Professor and Chair of the Educational Leadership Department at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. Susan has a doctorate in higher education with concentrations in adult learning and early childhood education. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in curriculum, instruction, and supervision. Her research focus is supporting the development of cultural competence in beginning teachers working with diverse learners.

Candace Thompson is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington, North Carolina. She received her Ph.D. in Social Foundations of Education from the University of South Carolina in 2008. Her research interests include culturally sustaining applied learning in teacher preparation, and youth empowerment. She lives this work by immersing her beginning education students (and herself) in local urban elementary and middle schools and the communities they serve.

Sandy Ruvalcaba Carrillo earned her undergraduate degree in bilingual/bicultural education from Western Illinois and completed a graduate degree in early childhood education at Erikson Institute. In her fifteen years in the education field, she has worked with children from preschool to 6th grade. She currently works as a resource teacher of English learners in a school on the Southwest side of Chicago. Her interests are in language acquisition, culturally relevant pedagogy, and culturally relevant literature.
