Dreams, Nightmares and Empty Signifiers ─ The English Country House in the Contemporary Novel

Terentowicz-Fotyga explores contemporary literary representations of the English country house. The author has organized the nine chapters that make up the main body of her text in three parts devoted to country house dreaming, country house nightmares, and the country house as meta fiction. Specific chapters examine The Stranger’s Child, Fingersmith, Finding Myself, and a wide variety of other texts. Urszula Terentowicz-Fotyga is Assistant Professor of English Literature and Culture at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. She is the author of a book study on Virginia Woolf’s novels (2006). Her main research interests are modernist and postmodernist fiction, semiotics of space and urban theory and representation.
