商品簡介
Shouldice recounts the life and times of his grandfather, also Frank, whose life story only began to take definition when the author discovered his soft-spoken grandfather named as a heroic sniper in a book about the Four Courts garrison during the Easter Rising (one of the 1500 volunteers) after his death. While the elder Frank was reticent to speak about the tumultuous times he lived through in his youth, he turned out to be a life-time hoarder and diligent archivist. His tan leather suit case held personal records--letters, official records, diaries, newspaper clippings, even a 1920 hurling match ticket of the Dub v. Tipperary game, a Croke Park fixture which gained infamy as Bloody Sunday. The author follows his grandfather's trail to Usk Prison in Wales, where Frank led a four-man escape as the one to offer ballast to three for their getaway before he hauled himself up a vertical brick wall to freedom. In 1916, a group of ordinary men and women became activists for change. While they let their actions do the talking, talking little about that aspect of their lives, the author brings to light his grandfather's and others' heroism and sacrifice. Distributed by Dufour.
