Bishop (psychology, State U. of New York, College at Old Westbury) presents therapists and counselors with methods to help clients manage addictive behaviors, based on what has come to be called cognitive- behavioral therapy (CBT) and its precursor, rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT). Emphasis is placed on integrating CBT-REBT techniques with Prochaska and DiClemente's (1982) stages of change model, which work whether addictive behavior is conceived of as a disease or as a complex biopsychosocial phenomenon.
