Emerging Principles of International Environmental Law

Atapattu (law, U. of Wisconsin-Madison Law School) examines principles of international environmental law and the relationship between economic, political, scientific, and legal factors. She focuses on sustainable development, the precautionary principle, the environmental impact assessment process and procedural rights, the common but differentiated responsibility principle, and the polluter pays principle, with attention to how these are connected to sustainable development. She traces the historical development of each, evaluates the treaties and other international instruments that embody it, and discusses applications by tribunals and other organizations.
