The original formulation of democracy--rule by the people--included the direct participation by citizens in legislative and political decision making, says Behrouze (mathematics and philosophy, Cuyahoga Community College, Ohio), but this fundamental has been distorted by modern representative governments. He offers a short conceptual history of the idea of democracy that highlights how powerful intellectual and political-economic forces have devoted themselves to portraying direct democracy as impractical and even dangerous. A companion volume makes the case for electronic voting. The last five leaves are bound wrong. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
