Restoration Staging 1660-74 cuts through received notions of Restoration theatre and drama to read early plays in their original theatrical contexts. Tim Keenan demonstrates that these oft-ignored play texts encode more information about their own performance at specific theatres than has hitherto been recovered.
Through careful analysis of the stage directions, scene headings, and performance clues embedded throughout these play texts, Keenan builds a radical new model of early Restoration staging. After demonstrating its efficacy with all new plays in the period, this model is applied as a tool to illuminate the long-standing critical problems in the field. Restoration Staging focuses on physical staging at the three early theatres operating in the first years of the Restoration: Vere Street, Bridges Street, and Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
Restoration Staging, 1660-74 takes account of all extant new plays written for or premiered at those theatres, focusing on scenic production at the last two to present an in-depth reassessment of early Restoration drama.
