This is an unabridged republication of the work originally published in 1917 by the Arthur H. Clark Company, Cleveland (Ohio), under the title A social history of the American family, v.1 : Colonial period. Calhoun (history, Clark U.) calls this his work of "genetic sociology," in which he describes the American family before the Revolutionary War as a product of European, particularly English ways of life and attitudes about opportunities, gender roles, family hierarchies, and appropriate sexual behavior. He describes family life in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and particularly in New England and the South. This volume includes a bibliography which the author informs us is complete in its primary materials but includes only the most important of secondary sources. There is no index.
