It has to really come to light that many urban water sources are contaminated with pharmaceuticals, including those used in hormone therapy. Even before that discovery, oral contraceptives have been the norm in the lives of women since the 1960s, despite concerns about side effects, and estrogen has become a common treatment for the symptoms of menopause. This report focuses on contraceptives that combine estrogen and progestogen as well as the same combination used in menopause therapy. Beyond the environmental concerns, contributors present their evaluations on exposure to estrogen-progestogen in studies of humans and animals, including the incidence of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and cutaneous malignant melanoma. They also present data relevant to an evaluation of the genesis of carcinomas and its mechanisms including exception and distribution, metabolism and excretion, receptor-mediated effects, and genetic and related effects.
