The book offers a collection of historic recipes generally unique to Louisiana's German Coast-- located along the Mississippi River north of New Orleans . Readers will learn how to cook unusual dishes like blackbird jambalaya, red bean gumbo, and mirliton salad, as well as such regional specialties as butter beans with shrimp, gallettes (flattish fried bread squares), dry tea cakes, and l'il coconut pies. These recipes, combined with Wilson's memories of life on the German Coast, document the culture and cuisine of this little-noticed region of Louisiana.
