For most of my life, I was trying to play a role that others thought I should: middle-class, subservient, housewife. That so isn’t me! Too bad it took me 50 years of hell to discover the authentic me—a kick-ass, businesswoman.
I married five times, starting at 14, expecting to be contented and fulfilled. Instead, the men I loved betrayed me.
Born with a deformed right arm, I expected to work for minimum wage, ($6,000/year in 1973) and did. Then, at 27 I got a real estate license and earned $5,000 my first month. When I learned that only 5% of agents in the nation made that much, I went into a state of panic, as if something terrible was about to happen to me. It was as if an alarm sounded in my head, “This isn’t right! Just who do you think you are anyway? Why, you only have a 9th grade education, you’re dumb. You’re too young! Stop this act before someone finds out you’re a fraud!” Consequently, in the next 11 months I only earned $1000, putting my income right at minimum wage. I ended up homeless with an 11-year-old daughter.
After six months of helpless and hopeless, I got my groove back, and had another $5k month, followed immediately by panic and self-sabotage. Over and over, I’d achieve higher and higher heights, then crash and burn.
