About the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism
Founded in 2013 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism pursues the objectives of propagating the Buddha’s teachings and the Venerable Master’s thoughts on Humanistic Buddhism. The Institute endeavors to recruit experts and nurture scholars of Buddhism, gather ancient and contemporary editions of the Buddhist Canons, as well as compile the complete works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Through the Center of International Affairs, the Institute translates the works of the Venerable Master and holds the annual Symposium on Humanistic Buddhism, in addition to other international academic forums, welcoming outstanding scholars and youths from around the world to study Buddhism.
序
The present Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism: 2025 Edition《中英人間佛教詞彙選—2025 增訂版》is a comprehensive revision and significant expansion of the Standardized FGS Names and Terms created by the International Buddhist Progress Society (IBPS) in 2005, and approved by the FGS Board of Directors.
This volume illuminates Fo Guang Shan and BLIA references, including terms, historical events, departments, organizations, persons, places, publications, Buddhist concepts, sutra titles, and quotes that appear in Fo Guang Shan publications and works by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Entries were selected based on translators’ needs, with the aim of assisting in the reading of the Complete Works of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, understanding of vernacular Buddhist expressions, and translation works of Humanistic Buddhism.
The substantial expansion and enhancement of content in this edition represents a collaborative effort. This work would not have been possible without the support of dedicated practitioners, translators, volunteers, and scholars whose insights have helped ensure the accuracy and accessibility of the terms presented. Their contributions reflect the community spirit that is central to Humanistic Buddhism.
Beyond its value to translators, The Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism serves multiple purposes: as a study companion in academic settings, a guide for temple visitors, or a resource for daily practice. It is designed to serve the needs of a broad spectrum of readers seeking clarity and connection through language.
