Recovering from the attack on Judr, Raegna travels across Galaenia with her friends' widowers and her reluctant husband, Bai, to warn their Queen of the warrior-men in Haven. Despite their shared grief, Raegna and Bai resume their silence, bracing the walls between each other.
Along the road, the Duchess of Galaenia finds them. Though wary of their appearance and the sealed message from Judr's Matriarch, she presents them to the Queen. Still, the tale of men wielding blades is laughable to the royal court. Raegna and Bai have to pretend their love to convince them of their marriage and their story. Even if the Queen believes it, they will need the High Council's approval to send warriors for vengeance.
The Council's decision may push Galaenia's new heroes to bring their own battle to Haven. Raegna trains alongside the Commander of the Maidens, and - against Galaenian law - so does Bai. The best way to infiltrate Haven is to send a man in. With their bond growing stronger, Raegna may fight for those she lost and the husband she never wanted.
