The Coptic wedding rite is one of the most sacred rituals in the Coptic Orthodox tradition, reflecting the sacred mysteries of the faith. Yet, this ritual has not been immune to change over the centuries. Social, economic, pastoral, and popular factors have affected the way the rite is celebrated. This evolution has remained largely unexamined until now.
A Textual History of the Coptic Wedding Rite is the first comprehensive study to explore the development of this crucial ritual. It reconstructs the rite from its earliest known manuscripts to its modern usage. Based on the original official liturgical texts, early manuscripts, and modern printed versions of the service books, the study traces the development of the structure, prayers, and hymns, of the Coptic wedding rite. Each manuscript is discussed within its historical context to clarify how the variations, additions, and deletions developed. More importantly, it details how popular practices were incorporated into the mainstream tradition.
The rite of marriage as a sacrament has raised important questions about its practice in the modern world. The Coptic wedding service, like the service in many Christian communities, has become a highly celebrated ritual conflated with significant cultural overtones. This fact raises an important question: how can the Church maintain the integrity of its sacramental rites while also meeting the expectations of its community and the needs of its faithful? This study argues that an understanding of the history and development of the rite of marriage is crucial to its renewal.
Of particular interest in the book is the liturgical music and meaning of the texts of the Coptic Church. The study clarifies the different categories of tunes, language of the texts, and the structure of the Coptic hymns. It supplies a key resource for understanding how the rite is to be chanted. The reconstructed rite at the end of the book with corrected and fully translated texts provides the Coptic clergy, laity, and scholars with a valuable reference. It was designed to be used out of box for an actual wedding.
Written in a style that is both scholarly and accessible, this book offers a unique resource for anyone interested in the sacrament of marriage, Coptic studies, liturgical music, and the way tradition intersects with practice in the daily life of the Church.
