商品簡介

Closer to the DMZ: A Vietnam Officer's Memoir (Revised Edition) is a deeply personal and historically grounded account of one soldier's journey through one of the most turbulent periods in modern American history. Written in the first person and enriched with thoughtful political and historical context, this memoir captures the ideals, ambitions, struggles, and emotional toll experienced by a young officer shaped by the Vietnam Era.

Beginning against the backdrop of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Sexual Revolution, and the dawn of the Digital Age, the narrative follows a group of engineering students navigating academic life and ROTC training under the looming shadow of war. As the conflict in Southeast Asia intensifies, the author's path leads from rigorous military preparation in the United States to deployment in Vietnam.

In August 1969, during the early stages of U.S. withdrawal, Lieutenant Jodaitis is assigned to Da Nang Support Command. Known for his intelligence and independent thinking-yet often challenged by a lack of diplomatic tact-he is repeatedly reassigned through successive operational phases, each bringing him closer to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and escalating combat conditions. His journey takes him from staff roles near Hue to the volatile environments of Camp Evans and Quang Tri, where he serves alongside units tasked with supporting firebases under constant threat.

Viewed by some superiors as a renegade and by others as a vital asset, his experience reflects the complex reality of a soldier navigating both battlefield demands and the rigid expectations of a "zero defects" Army culture. After his discharge in August 1970, he returns to a deeply divided America, confronting the challenges of reintegration during a time of widespread anti-war sentiment.

His transition back to civilian life-supported by continued service in the Army Reserve and National Guard-leads to a broader understanding of the political forces surrounding the war. The memoir closes during the resignation of Richard Nixon, marking the end of an era defined by conflict, controversy, and lasting consequences.

Powerful, reflective, and unflinchingly honest, Closer to the DMZ offers readers a vivid, firsthand perspective on war, identity, and the enduring impact of history on the individual.
