After breaking off her engagement to the rising star at her father's investment firm, Brit Donovan escapes on her honeymoon cruise alone. A perpetual misfit in her family's polished world, she's determined to outrun her reputation for chaos, but getting stranded in Costa Rica isn't exactly helping her cause. Nick Callaway isn't on a pleasure cruise. Armed with his brother's ashes and a letter detailing a list of locations, he's carrying out a dying wish one stop at a time. But when a fender bender on the way back to port causes Nick to miss the ship, his chances of completing the list have sailed. To top it off, he's inherited a new mission: help the infuriatingly bubbly Brit get home.
The two team up to make their way back to New York, but when fate derails their travel plans at every turn, Brit starts to wonder if home is really where her heart is, and Nick begins to see his brother's plans for him might be less about checking off a list, and more about learning to live life like the woman beside him.
