You have never met reality directly. You have only ever known the version your mind lets in: filtered, steadied, narrowed to what you can handle and what you cannot afford to ignore.

That narrowing is what makes experience possible, and most of the time it runs quietly beneath awareness. But its grip can become impossible to ignore: the deep groove of an addiction that a person understands completely and still cannot climb out of, or a moment in an altered state when the boundary between self and world softens and experience floods past its usual edges.

The Shape of Consciousness argues that consciousness is what this filtering feels like from the inside, once a mind begins to keep track of its own filtering and the outcome genuinely matters to the life it is trying to maintain. Inner life takes on a shape you can feel. Fear, grief, awe, craving, and the sense of being someone become motion through an inner landscape of basins you fall into, thresholds you cross, and returns to the familiar. The book gives that landscape a mathematical form, drawn from dynamical systems theory, the study of how complex things settle, tip, and change over time. Experience becomes something you can see and understand.

Part I builds the framework. Part II takes it where it can wound or heal: into addiction, altered states, and the deep-time record of life learning to filter. And it leads to a stranger implication. If consciousness is a question of how minds filter and what they have at stake, and it does not depend on the material they are made from, then it may never have belonged to biology alone. We are building artificial minds while still learning about our own, and the line we assumed ran between them may turn out to be an illusion.
