This part of the book is a deeply personal reflection on childhood trauma, survival, family separation, and the long journey of understanding a mother's pain. The narrator recalls frightening moments from childhood, including a violent man breaking into the home, using drugs, and threatening to burn the house down while the children were inside. Forced to grow up too soon, she tries to protect her younger siblings while carrying fear, poverty, loneliness, and the desperate need to be loved.
After moving into a small rented house, she takes on adult responsibilities as a teenager, caring for her siblings with very little food or money. Eventually, she makes the painful decision to leave for the United States to work and help support them. That choice breaks her heart because it means leaving her little sister behind.
Later, the story shifts into reunion, reflection, and spiritual awakening. After her mother is released from prison, the family reconnects in the United States. The narrator begins to see her mother not only as someone who caused pain, but also as a wounded woman shaped by her own abusive childhood. Over time, her mother changes, becomes more loving, works hard, and shares moments of joy with her children.
At the center of this story is the reality of generational trauma-pain passed from parent to child when no one has been taught how to heal. But the book also becomes a testimony of faith. Through Jesus, the narrator begins to understand that healing is not only about remembering what happened, but about allowing God to restore what was broken. Faith becomes the place where pain is confronted, forgiveness becomes possible, and love is no longer searched for in the wrong places.
The narrator recognizes that her mother searched for love in others because she did not know how to love herself. Through her own walk with Jesus, she begins to see that true love, protection, and identity must begin with God. The story moves toward forgiveness, self-awareness, and the hope that even the deepest wounds can be transformed when they are surrendered to Christ.
