The Irish novelist Julia Kavanagh (1824–1877) published English Women of Letters in two volumes in 1862. The work, which formed a pair with French Women of Letters (1862), traces the contribution of English women writers, from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth, to the development and formation of the modern novel. Volume 1 contains biographical sketches of five female authors followed by evaluations of their most important works: Aphra Behn (1640–1689) and Oroonoko; Sarah Fielding (1710–1768) and David Simple; Madame D'Arblay (1752–1840), also known as Fanny Burney, and Evelina and Cecilia; Charlotte Smith (1749–1806) and Emmeline, Ethelinda and The Old Manor House; and Ann Radcliff (1764–1823), and four of her gothic novels. This important work brought to attention in the Victorian mind the importance of these writers. It has served for many generations of English literature students as a biographical companion to women writers.

The renowned English chemist and meteorologist John Dalton (1766–1844) published A New System of Chemical Philosophy in two volumes, between 1808 and 1827. Dalton's discovery of the importance of the relative weight and structure of particles of a compound for explaining chemical reactions transformed atomic theory and laid the basis for much of what is modern chemistry. Volume 1, published 1808–1810, introduces Dalton's atomic theory and includes the results he obtained for the weights and structures of twelve groups of compounds. This study examines the impact of British capital flows on the evolution of capital markets in four countries - Argentina, Australia, Canada, and the United States - over the years 1870 to 1914. In substantive chapters on each country it offers parallel histories of the evolution of their financial infrastructures - commercial banks, non-bank intermediaries, primary security markets, formal secondary security markets, and the institutions that provide the international financial links connecting the frontier country with the British capital market. At one level, the work constitutes a quantitative history of the development of the capital markets of five countries in the late nineteenth century. First published in 1965, this book is a study of the feudal and economic development of a village from Norman times to the nineteenth century. Dr Chibnall has reconstructed the history of Sherington in north Buckinghamshire from little-known documents in the Public Records Office together with local and private records. After introductory chapters on the pre-Norman period Dr Chibnall gives a chronological account of the village's development. Some of the topics discussed are furlong names, the Domesday return, the impoverishment of the manorial families in late Tudor times, the yeomanry, and the effects on the village's economy of enclosure in neighbouring villages. Dr Chibnall's use of his various sources gives a closely integrated and continuous history of an English village which will be a model for social, agricultural and economic historians.

While much has been written about William Morris, little attention has been paid to his romances, which have generally been dismissed as 'escapist' or best smiled upon as self-indulgent fantasy. This 1987 book sets out to examine more carefully the premises of such dismissive terminology, looking at the ways in which our sense of the 'escapism' of Morris's knack for fairy-tale writing can be modified or expanded when seen in relation to the development of his imagination in other spheres, both political and creative. By examining physical and archaeological evidence, he sheds new light on the foundation and development of the kingdom of Wessex. He also uses modern boundaries, place names and local traditions, previously overlooked by scholars, to understand how Wessex history was shaped. He shows how the kingdom was first established, and its boundaries extended through warfare with its neighbours, between the late fifth to eighth centuries. Thereafter, famously led by Alfred the Great, Wessex fought and survived Viking invasions; but eventually fell to the Normans in 1066. Although much new archaeological evidence has been uncovered since the book was written, it continues to demonstrate the significance of landscape and folklore study to history.
