The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy (1848—1850) is a novel by the English author William Makepeace Thackeray. The novel took two years for him to write. Set in 19th century London, England, this novel features a young English gentleman Arthur Pendennis born in the country who sets out to seek his place in life and society. The novel portrays his love affairs with the callous Blanche Amory and poor Fanny. Both of them marry other people, and Pendennis finally weds Laura Bell, his adopted sister, who had always loved him. The characters include the snobbish social hanger-on Major Pendennis and the tipsy Captain Costigan. Miss Amory and Sir Francis Clavering are somewhat reminiscent of Becky Sharp and Sir Pitt from Vanity Fair. In line with other Thackeray's works, Pendennis offers an insightful and satiric picture of human character and aristocratic society. 有人說，香港只有房子，沒有建築；報紙也只有地產版，沒有建築新聞。 香港，世界人口密度最高的「The逼City」，單是港島區星羅其佈的超級摩天大廈便有四百幢之多，光速世代大、小型基建天天不息，看似乏味的當代港式結構，其實不少都呈現獨特的環球概念、地踎智慧，經營著一個又一個的有機社區。 正如香港設計中心主席嚴志明不時提到，要將「空間」（space）轉化成「地方」（place），最重要是人的參與。公共空間為人所做、服務群眾，自然要有在地性格、文化溫度，每一個環節，都與設計息息相關。 本書以「地方營造」（placemaking）為主題，透過十三位在香港努力營造人文關懷地方的幕後英雄經驗，藉人與空間互動成有機地標的成功案例、別具心思的硬件及軟件設計，探討未來在公共空間的新嘗試及舊建築活化項目的可能性，甚至為社會政策獻計，達到地方有機自然地發展、聚集人群，甚至引發創意，令香港變得更有特色與活力。

The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong presents the Chinese painting exhibition Tradition to Contemporary: Ink Painting and Artistic Development in 20th-century China. The exhibition is curated from artworks within the museum’s permanent collection. Works trace the evolution of ink painting in Hong Kong, and include many of the masters that have helped to build the city’s art scene and museum collections. The exhibition and its associated catalogue offers audiences a broad overview of the provenance and aesthetic quality of individual works, and the cultural interactions among twentieth-century Chinese artists, curators, collectors and scholars in Hong Kong, mainland China and abroad. It makes reference to individuals and their networks, to teacher-student relationships and to the generosity of the numerous painters who have helped UMAG to grow the museum’s holdings, and whose work constitutes the foundation of UMAG’s educational work today.
