What has traditionally been the main matter explored by Cantonese literati? 第一次及第二次世界大戰因德國納粹主義及日本軍國主義興起，而造成人類展開了破壞性且全球的戰爭，尤其以第二次世界大戰，可說是全球性的戰爭，在戰爭進展到最高潮時，全球有61個國家和地區參戰，有19億以上的人口被捲入戰爭，戰火遍及歐洲、亞洲、美洲、非洲及大洋洲五大洲；交戰雙方同時也在大西洋、太平洋、印度洋及北冰洋四大洋展開戰鬥。最後，第二次世界大戰以同盟國的勝利結束。 本書集結了突擊雜誌近三年來關於二戰太平洋戰場的各種戰役，由於主要是以海空戰為主，故取名為太平洋海空戰而副標題則是選擇其中一篇「宿命之敗退─雷伊泰灣之戰」中的栗田艦隊做為本書的書名，亦暗指日本發動太平洋戰爭的結局。 書中共收錄了六篇文章，按戰役發展的先後順序編排，首篇為「爪哇海戰」。1942年初盟軍建立了由美、英、荷、澳(ABDA)四國組成的聯合艦隊，試圖在東南亞防衛日軍的侵略，但卻遭到日本聯合艦隊覆滅的命運。緊接著第二篇是1942年5月所發生的「珊瑚海海戰」，這是人類海戰史上第一次航母機動部隊的對決，結果從數字上看是日軍小勝，但是美軍吸取了教訓改進戰術，僅在一個月後的中途島戰役中大敗日軍，創造了一場不可能的勝利。第三篇是「美日聖克魯斯海空大戰」，本文敘述在美日中途島戰役後，美軍就開始提前進行反攻的計劃，雙方在所羅門海域的聖克魯斯群島展開了海空大戰。第四篇的時空則轉移到1944年的「雷伊泰灣海戰」，主角則以栗田艦隊的角度來審視此場大海戰，最後兩篇則分別收錄了太平洋戰爭末期日本為躲避美軍的封鎖而奇蹟似的完成一次運輸，另一篇為「沖繩戰役」，此役是太平洋戰爭最後一次的登陸戰亦是最大的一次，參戰雙方展開了激烈的戰鬥，此役由於日軍的頑強抵抗，使得美國最終放棄登陸日本本土而以原子彈來結束戰爭。
