Language Processing Problems

Originally published in 2004, this alphabetical dictionary is a major reference work, based on the archives of the English Place-Name Society and reflecting the scholarship in the subject, of all the names of cities, towns, villages, hamlets, rivers, streams, hills and other geographical locations included in the Ordnance Survey Road Atlas of Great Britain (1983). It provides a reflection of contemporary England, not just its historical past. Every place-name entry has a unique National Grid reference number, a list of historical spellings, the age and meaning of the name and its etymology (pre-Indo-European, Indo-European, Celtic, Primitive Welsh, Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, Old French, Middle English, Modern English). Where appropriate, a commentary is provided on comparable names, on the problems, history and significance of the name for settlement, economic and social history, the development of the language and on its variant pronunciations and spellings.

Wolfram's Parzival is one of the great medieval romances, but the complexities and obscurities of source, language and the Grail symbol have led to a virtual neglect by scholars of the problems of structure and characterisation. Medieval characterisation tended towards idealisation, symbolism and the view that the individual could be considered a member of a class or type; in Wolfram however the beginnings of individual characterisation can be seen. This 1966 book studies the types and techniques of character-portrayal in Parzival and of the emergence of the idea of individuality. Although Hungarian ballads were first collected about a hundred years before this book was first published in 1967, they have remained largely unknown to Western scholars. This was the first comprehensive study of the Hungarian material in any major European language. Dr Leader provides an analytic description and full English text of the main Hungarian classical ballads with their published versions. She examines their characteristics, analyses their themes, motifs and underlying folk beliefs, and relates them to ballads of other countries, particularly England and Scotland. This pioneer work suggested fresh interpretations and solutions to the problems of Hungarian ballad scholarship and enlarged the study of international ballads by making the Magyar material available in translation. It had repercussions on a wide range of folklore studies and on the comparative study of European literatures, to which the oral narrative traditions serve as important groundwork.

In order to operate in an evidence-based fashion, mental health services rely on accurate, relevant, and systematic information. The Phonetics of Russian is intended to help those studying Russian to pronounce the language well, and to give students of general phonetics a knowledge of the phonetic system of Russian. The Prajñā-pāramitā-ratna-guna-samcaya-gāthā (abbr. Rgs), 'Verses summarising the Precious Qualities of the Perfection of Wisdom', is a notable example of Buddhist Sanskrit literature at its earliest stage. It is probably the only extant text in Prajñāpāramitā literature written in the typical Buddhist Sanskrit language, it displays a number of unique grammatical forms and constructions, and is one of the earliest documents of Prajñāpāramitā thought. Dr Yuyama's aim was to present an edition of Sanskrit Recension A, represented by a single manuscript kept in the Asiatic society of Calcutta, which appeared to preserve more original readings than the other recensions in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese. Detailed footnotes explain how the readings were adopted in this version. There is included an edition of the Tibetan Version from Tunhuang, and it is argues that this version offers better readings of many verses. The many complex problems of the Rgs literature are discussed at length.

Critics take for granted the importance of rhythm in poetry and prose, above all its capacity for suggesting states of mind, especially emotional states. But they are seldom clear what range of effects rhythm can reasonably be credited with, nor even, at times, what exactly the term refers to. Rhythm as a means of suggesting states of mind is discussed in the light of its being not merely something the reader listens to, but something he does, a system of movement. Almost all of the problems studied in this book are motivated by an overriding foundational question: What are the appropriate axioms for mathematics? Through a series of case studies, these axioms are examined to prove particular theorems in core mathematical areas such as algebra, analysis, and topology, focusing on the language of second-order arithmetic, the weakest language rich enough to express and develop the bulk of mathematics. In many cases, if a mathematical theorem is proved from appropriately weak set existence axioms, then the axioms will be logically equivalent to the theorem. A central theme of this book is that the main problems of philosophy and certainly the main traditional problems in the theory of knowledge, concern the space between language and the world. Professor Danto distinguishes between descriptive concepts, concerned with saying how the world is and semantic concepts, which have to do with the application of descriptions of the world. Failure to make these distinctions is responsible for a class of seemingly irresolvable disputes over the foundations of knowledge; but when the distinction is appreciated, a plausible philosophical theory of what it is to know the world can be framed which is free from the standard scepticisms.

Originally published in 1966, Beryl Loftman Bailey's book was one of the first on the Jamaican Creole language, its origins and its influence on the teaching of English in Jamaica. A native Jamaican herself, Bailey's personal experience of both learning and later teaching English in the Caribbean was a springboard to her interest in the problems of language interference in contact situations. She challenged a notion prevalent throughout English teachers in Caribbean at the time that Creole was a 'dialect' not a language and therefore need not be considered in teaching. The social implications of this view are also explored.
