Empowered by Ancestors: Controversy over the Imperial Temple in Song China (960–1279) examines the enduring tension between cultural authority and political power in imperial China by inquiring into Song ritual debates over the Imperial Temple. During these debates, Song-educated elites utilized various discourses to rectify temple rituals in their own ways. In this process, political interests were less emphasized and even detached from ritual discussions. Meanwhile, Song scholars of particular schools developed various ritual theories that were used to reshape society in later periods. Hence, the Song ritual debates exemplified the great transmission of ancestral ritual norms from the top stratum of imperial court downward to society. In this book, the author attempts to provide a lens through which historians, anthropologists, experts in Chinese Classics, and scholars from other disciplines can explore Chinese ritual in its intellectual, social, and political forms.

The Politics of Higher Education: The Imperial University in Northern Song China uses the history of the Imperial University of the Northern Song to show the limits of the Song emperors’ powers. At the time, the university played an increasingly dominant role in selecting government officials. This role somehow curtailed the authority of the Song emperors, who did not possess absolute power and, more often than not, found their actions to be constrained by the institution. The nomination mechanism left room for political maneuvering and stakeholders—from emperors to scholar-officials—tried to influence the process. Hence, power struggles among successive emperors trying to assert their imperial authority ensued. Demands for greater autonomy by officials were, for example, unceasing. Chu Ming-kin shows that the road to autocracy was anything but linear. This study tests the factors of transaction costs (TC) and resource-based views (RBV) to explain the MNEs’ entry decisions in China. By using large firm-level data from China, I show in this paper that variables related to internal uncertainty (e.g., management) and firm-specific assets tend to affect MNEs’ entry decisions in a way that is consistent with the transaction cost logic; that is, the higher degree of internal uncertainty, the MNEs may require more control over the foreign facilities or the JV. On the other hand, those variables related to external uncertainty (e.g., marketing) and intangible assets tend to conform to the resource-based view, which means higher external uncertainty would cause the MNEs to leverage the resources or local experience of local partners. This suggests that MNEs may need complementary resources from local partners to reduce the external uncertainty and enhance the value of their intangible resources.

燃料電池係為新能源的發電方式之一，號稱零碳排放的電力，無廢氣或廢水產生。因此，各國皆投入大量資源進行該科技產業化的研究。本研究目的係希冀在資源有限的條件下，研擬出台灣燃料電池產業發展的最佳化策略順序，由利害關係人的角度，廣邀氫能與燃料電池的業界、學研界及官方代表，利用德菲法的原理，針對燃料電池產業各種不同議題凝聚共識。 本研究除藉由會議方式，依照德菲法（Delphi Method）原則建構未來台灣燃料電池發展的架構外，並配合層級分析法（Analytic Hierarchy Process, AHP），建構評估的模式，提升決策過程的品質，期能從決策分析中反映未來發展優先策略。分析結果顯示現階段應儘快釐清「產品定位」，台灣依目前國際市場的潛在規模與未來成本的可能發展，定置型燃料電池的應用是目前普遍認為最具國際市場發展潛力的產品項目，其次是運輸載具、氫能相關產品。

為了克服海外投資的風險，外資企業通常擁有經營資源優勢，因此在投資國當地的生產表現普遍優於本地企業。本研究利用隨機生產效率分析法，針對台灣電子零組件業進行觀察。實証結果發現在1986年至1996年間，隨著台灣國內市場加快開放步調，外資企業的生產效率之提升卻不及本國企業。若進一步觀察技術效率與TFP成長，本地企業的技術效率與TFP成長表現在期間內均優於外資企業。此一結果說明外資企業與本地企業之生產力差距已逐步縮減，台灣本地電子零組件產業的生產能力已能迎頭趕上外資企業。市場自由化措施顯然有助於國內企業加速技術提升，以因應市場的競爭壓力。
