Dee 國際關係講席教授邁克爾·德施追溯了第一次世界大戰至今的歷史，考察在這期間美國聯邦政府決策者與學者（書中也稱之為環形道與象牙塔）之間的互動關係。在他的新作《舍本逐末》中，德施指出，在戰爭或社會危機期間，社會科學研究更關注實際問題的解決，托馬斯·謝林與沃爾特·羅斯托就是典型的例子；而在和平時期，學者又回到了與現實不太相關的研究議題。政治學等社會科學學科，鼓勵方法複雜、邏輯嚴謹的學術工作，而非那些涉及國家安全政策與現實的議題，因而，學術文化愈發偏離解決實際問題的最終目標。本書是一部豐富的思想史，也是防止學術研究迷失方向的重要警醒，對當代社會科學研究有著積極的現實意義。
