Improving maternal and child health and nutrition is a key element in such projects as the Millennium Development Goals, Bangladesh's national strategies for poverty reduction, and international organizations' efforts to reduce the effects of famine, war, social standards and neglect. This report explains what a variety of agencies can do to accelerate progress, particularly in countries like Bangladesh that have achieved significant success but need help in sustaining that success and continuing to improve. It describes how the poor are sharing in the progress, if they do at all, the main determinants of maternal and child health, the efficacy of programs involved in improvements, and the cost-effectiveness of the efforts. Amongst other factors, the report finds that immunization, the training of birth attendants, expansion of female secondary schooling and rural electrification have made some of the greatest changes, with mixed results in nutrition and fertility reduction programs.
