Changing Education to Change the World ─ A New Vision of Schooling

In this sequel book to his HEALING CIVILIZATION, Dr. Naranjo addresses the cultural and ecological crisis of the 21st Century. He reviews a number of theories and approaches to bettering society and advocates, in particular, the innovation of making the educational system more ethically and spiritually directed--more inner directed than devoted to sustaining current economic or cultural models for society. Naranjo examines the relationship between past historical eras and cultural progress and the growth and development of the individual child from infancy to maturity and old age. While sober in tone regarding these various global crises, the author maintains an optimistic view based on the continuing spiritual development of humanity. His opening paragraph may serve as a good indicator of the tone of this book: "Much has been said about "our historical moment" at this end of millennium, be it with a catastrophic attitude or with the enthusiasm appropriate to the change of millennium, and it is difficult to ignore the relevance of the apocalyptic vision of our times, and there is no doubt that we are attending a cultural crisis that seems headed toward collapse, it is also healthy to entertain a certain optimism, born of hope and faith in human destiny."

Claudio Naranjo, M.D., is the author of Character & Neurosis, Ennea-Type Structures, and The One Quest. He has taught comparative religion at the California Institute of Asian Studies, human psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and meditation at Nyingma Institute of Berkeley, California. He was also the founder of SAT Institute, an integrative psycho-spiritual school, now headquartered in Spain. Dr. Naranjo has initiated educational reform programs in higher education in Spain, Italy, Chile, and other nations. He is a member of the Club of Rome and a recent nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifetime contributions to psychology, therapy, and education. He lives in Berkeley, California.
