Based on original sources, Sir Glyn Jones: A Proconsul in Africa is an extensive biography of the life of Sir Glyn Jones.
Jones was promoted to Governor of Nyasaland following a distinguished career in the colonial service, which began in Northern Rhodesia as an administrative cadet in 1931. In 1960, as the demand for early constitutional advance in the northern territories of the Central Africa Federation became more insistent, Jones moved from Northern Rhodesia to neighbouring Nyasaland, where he stayed for the most critical years of his colonial service career. As the last governor of Nyasaland, Jones oversaw the country's transition to modern-day Malawi, involving widespread unrest and a state of emergency being declared.
Based on Colin Baker's research and exclusive access to the papers of Sir Glyn Jones, this book sheds new light on the controversial relationship between Jones and Hastings Banda. This revealing account is the third volume of Baker's biographical studies of the last three governors of Nyasaland.
