商品簡介

Can we become truly rational, knowing how irrationally we are wired?

Human beings are creatures of reason. Yet we are also creatures of instinct. We aspire to wisdom, self-mastery, and moral responsibility, but much of what we do is shaped by impulses we did not choose, biases we barely perceive, and evolutionary forces that continue to influence how we think, feel, and act.

What happens when these two views of human nature collide? If both science and philosophy are right, if we are at once rational and instinct-driven, what does that mean for agency, responsibility, and the possibility of living well?

Drawing on Stoicism, evolutionary psychology, modern science, and contemporary debates about technology and democracy, this book explores some of the oldest and most unsettling questions of human existence. From personal suffering to political polarization, from the search for meaning to the erosion of civic life, it examines the tension between the minds evolution has given us and the ideals to which reason calls us.

Stoicism offers a vision of how we ought to live, grounded in virtue, self-mastery, and moral responsibility. Evolutionary psychology reveals how we actually live, shaped by ancient instincts, emotional heuristics, and unconscious biases that evolved not for truth but for survival. The gap between these perspectives is not a contradiction to resolve. It is a reality to confront, and perhaps the very place where wisdom begins.

Yet confronting this tension points beyond personal resilience toward a larger question: how human beings can live wisely together in an age of distraction, polarization, and institutional strain. Private virtue remains essential, but it cannot be the whole story. Philosophy must also engage the world.

We are shaped by evolution, culture, temperament, and circumstance. Yet we are also the animal that reflects. In that fragile space between impulse and action, instinct and judgment, lies the possibility of freedom.
