This book was originally published in 1965. At the time of publication no nation had greater knowledge of, or interest in, the development and exploitation of the Arctic lands than the Soviet Union. The skills acquired through living in remote and cold regions were being put to use in the Antarctic with considerable success. Dr Armstrong, who also made a long study of the Arctic and sub-Arctic region, here follows the Russian advance into the north (beyond the Arctic circle in Europe and latitude 60oN. in Asia) from their first appearance there until 1959. He examines the causes and effects of their settlement and compares the solutions to some of the problems with those made in North America. Dr Armstrong's study was intended not merely for geographers and historians, but also for courses on settlement problems.

To many the Boxer Uprising of 1900 is a half-forgotten episode in the history of China's resistance to progress. Yet the Boxers are regarded by many as the founders of Chinese nationalism; for although the Uprising was a failure, it forced the government to realize that it must modernize the country and put it on an equal footing with the West. Dr Prucell based this 1963 study mainly on freshly published Chinese sources and he examined with detachment and fairness the origin and development of this important movement in Chinese history. By his use of Chinese sources Dr Purcell provides an insight into the nature of the country as well as the Boxer mentality. The accession of ten new members to the European Union on May 1st 2004 was among the most significant developments in the history of European integration. Based upon studies conducted by the European Forecasting Network, this 2006 book analysed key aspects of the impact of this enlargement with reference to eight of the ten new Member States, namely the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs).
