This book, originally published in 1974, contains a collection of essays on demographic, economic and social aspects of the urbanization in Australia between 1947 and 1971 and the role of planning in urban development. Its purpose was to bring together in an integrated form research which was being undertaken on urbanization in Australia. The subject has not been treated in a single volume before. With eight-five per cent of its population in urban centres and a rapid rate of post-war growth, Australia ranked as one of the most urbanized countries on earth. Since 1947 the country had experienced an unprecedented expansion of mineral exploitation, manufacturing and tertiary industry with associated metropolitan expansion. It is the social parameters and aspects of this growth, and some of the potential implications for Australian society, that provide the main theme of this volume.

This is a book about the history of family life in several senses. The author puts forward a thesis about the European family in relation to the conspicuous differences between European economic and social development and that of the rest of the world. He discusses the numbers and functions of servants, the numbers and situation of orphans and the aged, and the difficult question of whether American slaves lived in families at all. There is an extended analysis of the extraordinary turnover in population in England and in Europe in pre-industrial times, and a full discussion of the figures for English illegitimacy since Shakespeare's day. There is also a consideration of the elusive topic of the age of sexual maturity and its variations over time. The book represents some of the results of the first fifteen years of work in the newly instituted subject of historical sociology with particular reference to the family.

Propertius, though his works are small in volume, is one of the foremost poets of the Augustan age, and his writing has a certain appeal to modern tastes (witness the admiration of Ezra Pound). The introduction provides the necessary historical and critical background and relates Book I to the rest of the elegies; the notes are helpful and to the point; and the text has a reasonable minimum of apparatus. There are no modern editions of this size and scope.

They discuss the literary characteristics of Hebrew poetry with special reference to devices such as the acrostic, and examine the problems faced by the New English Bible translators. Over the years many different approaches have been made to the interpretation of the Psalms. The authors characterize these as the spiritual, the historical, the form-critical and the cultic approaches, and their own commentary strikes an effective balance between them. One of their primary purposes is to bring out the religious teaching that is of permanent value within the Psalms.
